Shelby SuperCars is proud to introduce its latest contribution to automobile enthusiasts worldwide, the Tuatara. The name “Tuatara” was inspired by a modern day New Zealand reptile that bears the same name. A direct descendent of the dinosaur, this reptile’s name translated from the Maori language means “peaks on the back,” which is quite fitting, given the winglets on the back of the new car. Shelby Automobiles has announced their collaboration with the legendary drag racer Don “The Snake” Prudhomme to create a limited-edition GT500 conversion. The Prudhomme-Shelby GT500 will push out 800hp (588kW) from the 5.4-litre supercharged powerplant when running on racing fuel. Filled with regular 93 octane maximum power is reduced to 750hp (552kW) which is still quite a tidy sum. Though the car is intended specifically for the drag strip, it’s also road-legal and promises to deliver serious fun on the street and show circuit as well as at the track. Shelby is only making 100 packages for the Prudhomme Edition Super Snake and each of them will cost US$100,000 excluding the actual car. [MotorAuthority]
